FOGG
Fogg is an English surname whose origins lie within the British Isles, specifically England. The name is associated with the English language and Christian cultural contexts.
The earliest evidence for the surname appears in the early sixteenth century. A witness named Thomas Fogg is recorded in the Fine Court Rolls of Norfolk in 1509, during the reign of King Henry VIII. The name continued to be documented in Lancashire: on 20 July 1550 Martynus Fogge married Elizabeth Green in Whalley, and on 27 April 1557 an infant named William Fogg was christened in the same parish. In Kent the name is also attested from an early date; George Fogge was christened on 21 October 1576 in Chilham.
Scholars recognise two principal derivations for the surname. One etymology traces it to the Old English word fogga, meaning “birdcatcher” or “fowler.” Under this interpretation the name would have been an occupational label for those who trapped or captured birds for trade, or it may have been a nickname describing a person with bird-like mannerisms or appearance.
The second derivation links the name to the medieval English word fogge, possibly of Old Norse origin, which denotes “grass left to grow after the hay has been cut.” In this sense the surname could have been topographic, applied to someone dwelling near such a meadow, or metonymic, indicating a person who grazed cattle on it during winter. The word continues to survive as a dialect form in parts of Yorkshire and East Lancashire.
Variants of the spelling include Fog(h), reflecting the historical fluidity of orthography. In the seventeenth century a notable bearer, Laurence Fogg (1623–1718), served as Dean of Chester from 1691 and published several theological treatises in Cambridge in 1679.
Today, the surname Fogg remains a distinct marker of English heritage, embedded in both occupational and topographic traditions within the United Kingdom.
