Sadler is an English surname of occupational origin. The name is derived from the Middle English word sadeler, which referred to a person who crafted saddles or worked with the saddlery of horses.

The earliest documentary evidence of the surname appears in the late thirteenth century. In 1288 a man named Simon le Sadelere is recorded in the Hundred Rolls of Sussex during the reign of King Edward the First, who reigned from 1272 to 1307. The name is also found in the 1296 Records of the Manor of Wakefield, Yorkshire, where a Peter le Sadelare is listed, and in the 1379 Poll Tax Returns of Yorkshire, which name a Thomas Sadeler. These instances demonstrate that the trade of saddle making was established in England at that time and that the occupation had a particular reputation.

In the Anglo‑Saxon period, the Old English word sadol, the Old Saxon zadel and the Middle English and Middle German sadel all described a saddle. The importance of the craft lay in the central role of horses as the sole mode of long‑distance land transport in medieval Europe, and as essential for both civil life and warfare. Consequently, those who made, repaired or sold saddles and harnesses held a recognisable position within the community.

Over time the occupational term evolved into a hereditary family name. The surname is now found in several historic variations, including Saldler, Saddler, Sadleir and Sadlier. By the sixteenth century the name was in use throughout England. A record of Cicyly Sadler, daughter of Roger Sadler, was entered on 20 April 1567 in the parish registers of Saint Peter le Poer, London, confirming its continued use within the country.

The reach of the Sadler family extended beyond Britain. In the seventeenth century an early settler named Rowland Sadler departed from London aboard the “Merchant's Hope” in July 1635 bound for Virginia, indicating that members of the family participated in the early colonisation of the New World.
