BROCK
The Brock surname is an English surname that derives from the Old English broc, meaning “badger”. It was originally a nickname, conferred upon someone whose physical traits or temperament reminded others of this animal, or perhaps a person perceived as vexing or mischievous.
Another plausible root is the same Old English word broc, but in this case its meaning was “brook”. Consequently, the surname may have been originally topographical, assigned to those who dwelt near a brook or stream.
There is also a third derivation that can be traced to Old French. The terms broque and brocke meant a young stag, and in the medieval environment a person might have been attributed this name to describe a youthful, energetic person.
Evidence for the surname can be seen in surviving medieval documents. The earliest documented spelling is that of Joel le Broc, dated 1222 in the Calendar of Patent Rolls of Essex during the reign of Henry III. In addition, a Richard Brock is recorded in the 1275 Subsidy Rolls of Worcestershire.
In later centuries Brock appears in various records and on the coast of the Channel Islands. Daniel de Lisle Brock, who lived from 1762 to 1842, served as bailiff of Guernsey and represented the island’s interests in London. His brother, Sir Isaac Brock, born in 1769 and deceased in 1812, held the rank of Major-General, serving in the West Indies, Holland and the Baltic. He was killed in an engagement with General Van Rennselaer at Queenstown, Canada.
Geographical references also support the toponymic interpretation. A river called the Brock runs through Lancashire, a name that, like the surname, is thought to derive from the Old English broc.
Other spellings of the name include Broc, Broch and Brocks; the variation in rendering is typical of medieval orthographic practice. The Brock surname is now fairly common in English‑speaking countries, reflecting the migration of English families abroad. Despite the variegated possible origins, the name remains firmly within the tradition of English surnames categorized as nickname, topographic name or of Anglo‑Saxon and Old French influence.
