" The true and original name of this family," says Mr. Shirley, is Barton — Peter de Barton, lord of West Barton, in Hampshire, having married Alice, only daughter and heiress of Sir Robert de Wallop, who died in the eleventh year of Edwai'd I. His great-grandson, Richard, assumed the name of Wallop, and was one of the knights of the shire in the second of Edward III. Over and Nether Wallop co.
