An Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names (1857)
(origin: Gaelic. Local) From the parish of Strachan in Kincardineshire, Scotland, formerly Strathaen. The name may come from stra or strath, a vale, from the root strath, a valley, through which a river runs, and chan or ceann, the head, meaning "the head of the valley," or "a little valley," from Strathan.
