Schuck is a surname of German origin that has been recorded in the country since at least the late fourteenth century. Early documentary evidence includes the name of Heinrich Schuch, a burgess of Eblingen in 1388, and of Christian Schuchster of Robhaupten in 1398.

The name is an occupational surname. Two primary derivations are recorded in the linguistic literature. One derives it from the Middle High German word schucke, meaning “shuttle” or “weaver’s shuttle”, indicating an ancestor who worked in the textile industry. The other derives it from the Old High German word scuoh, meaning “shoe”, or from the verb schouwen, meaning “to look or inspect”. This latter derivation has given rise to the interpretation of the name as belonging to a watchman or supervisor. A third interpretation, based on the pronunciation of the term Schucker, suggests a meaning of “push or shove”, though this is considered less common.

In the German language the name appears in many variations; these include Schuh, Schuch, Schug, Schuk, Schuelke, Schulke and several others that incorporate the suffixes -ster, -ter, -macher or -sch. The name is also found in forms such as Schucker, Schukert and Schuecker in continental Europe. In Eastern Europe the spelling Schuk is common, and in Scandinavia the form Schück occurs. In the United States a number of spellings are recorded, including Shuck, Shucks, Shanker and Schuckers.

Heraldic evidence exists for the name in Rietstap's “Armorial General”. The blazon given is “per bend, gold and blue, overall a lion rampant”. This suggests a family of some standing and is one of the earliest classical references to the name in print.

The surname has spread beyond Germany and is now common in several countries. In the United States the first recorded immigration of a Schuck family was that of Friedrich Schuck, who arrived at Nebraska City in 1872. The name has subsequently become common in states such as New York, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. In Canada the surname is less prevalent but can be traced to German immigrants from the Baden‑Wurttemberg region who settled in the country in the early twentieth century. Today, while the name remains most frequently found in Germany and the United States, it is also present, to a lesser extent, in Canada.
