The earliest known instance of the name is that of Hamo Prichere, who appears in the Pipe Rolls of Dorset in 1175, during the reign of King Henry XI. Subsequent examples in contemporary sources include Geoffrey Pricke of Norfolk in 1221, Alice Priche recorded in 1295 in Ecclesiastical Records of Barnwell, Cambridgeshire, and Simon Prike in a 1340 Feet of Fines entry for Suffolk.
In the eighteenth century the spelling had stabilised as Pryke. A case in point is the christening of James Pryke, son of William and Judia Pryke, on 15 April 1792 at St. Paul’s, Deptford.
