t° NESS. A-Sax. and Danish, ness, Germ, nase, a nose ; also a promontory, as Dengeness in Kent, and tlie Naze in Norway. This occurs as a termination in several names, as Longness, Thickness, Filtness, which may refer to some peculiarity in the noses of the original hearers. More probably, however, they are local.
