Patronymica Britannica (1860)

MACHELL. At Crakenthorpe, co. Westmoreland, temp. Norman Conquest. The name has been variously written Maucha;!, Malchael, Mauchell, and Machell, and latinized j\Ialus Catulus, — " the good-furnothing Pvpinj " a very uncomplimentary designation, but very quietly submitted to by the bearers, as appears from many a charter in which it occurs.
