LEAR. Not from the personal name rendered illustrious liy the great dramatist, but from Lire, in tlie arrondissement of Evreux in Normandy. Mr. Ferguson thinks it may have come originally from Hler (Hleer) one of the names of the Neptune of Northern mythology.
