JEAVONS
Jeavons is a surname of English origin, first recorded in the late twelfth century in the Curia Regis rolls of Hertfordshire. The earliest known spelling is John le Jofne, dated 1199, during the reign of King John.
The name is patronymic, deriving from the medieval personal name Geoffrey, originally a Germanic compound of gawia meaning territory and frid meaning peace. Consequently, Jeavons signifies "son of Geoffrey" or "descendant of Geoffrey".
There are several recorded variations in the early medieval period, including Jevon, Jeavons and Jeavons. One line of development traces back to the Latin word Juvenis ("the young one"), brought into England by the Normans after the 1066 invasion as Iouene. Examples of this form appear in contemporary documents: Bartholomew le Joevene of Bedfordshire in the charters of the Abbey of Ramsay, 1254; Robert Le Jeofne in the Fees Rolls of Northampton, 1254; and Thomas Le Geven in the 1279 Hundred Rolls of Oxfordshire.
Another potential source, predominantly Welsh, suggests a fusion of the names John and Evan, as seen in records such as Rirt ap Jevan ap Eigon (1393) and the later spelling Jevanne documented in Glamorgan charters, 1459. Other Welsh entries include Hopkin ap Jevan of Glamorgan, noted as a student at Oxford University, 1594, and Thomas Jeavon of London, whose wife Ann was buried at the church of St Thomas the Apostle on 1 March 1658, during the reign of Oliver Cromwell.
The heraldic badge associated with the Jeavons family is described by the blazon: a blue field, a silver chevron between three silver cockerels, each armed, crested, and jelloped in red. This coat of arms underscores the family’s long-standing presence within English heraldry.
