HUSON
Huson is a patronymic surname of English origin that derives from the medieval given name Hugh. The original meaning of Hugh is heart, mind or spirit, taken from the Old Germanic word hug. Consequently, the surname means literally son of Hugh.
The name was introduced into England by the Normans following the Conquest of 1066 in the Old-French forms Hue and Hughe. It became popular among Norman settlers, in part because of the fame of St. Hugh of Lincoln (1140–1200) who established the first Carthusian monastery in England. Patronymic surnames derived from Hugh include Hughson, Huson, Hewson, Howson, Hooson, Hoosun and Howson.
Historical evidence of the surname dates back to the early fourteenth century. The first recorded spelling appears as that of Richard Hughson in 1310 in the Calendar of Letter Books of the City of London, during the reign of King Edward the Confessor. Other early attestations include William Huggesone (1327, Worcestershire), Henry Howsone (1332, Cumberland) and Michael Hwesone (1378, Essex). The marriage of Rodger Hooson and Alice Clarke was recorded at the Church of Allhallows, London, on 30 September 1670.
Geographically, the surname has a strong association with northern England, particularly the counties of Lancashire and Yorkshire. It is also found in Scotland, often reflected in the variation Hewson. In recent centuries, migration has spread the name to other English-speaking countries, most commonly the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The surname remains relatively rare, with its frequency considerably lower than that of many other patronymic families.
Other variations of the surname include Hudson, Husan, Hussen, Huston, Houson, Hutson and Huisman. These forms have evolved through differences in regional dialects, phonetic spelling and anglicisation over time. While the suffix -son consistently denotes “son of”, the root of the name across the variants remains the personal name Hugh or its equivalent in other languages. It should be noted that surnames such as Hasson and Hassan are included among broadly similar sounding names, but they possess different origins and meanings and are not considered legitimate variants of Huson.
