For the traditional origin of this name in the circumstance of a Norman kuiglit having, at the battle of Hastings, succoured duke William of Normandy and given him air when he was in danger of .suffocation — see Eng. Surn. ii. 3. The true meaning of the name seems to be heir (hajres) since the H.R. give us the forms of Le Eyr, and Le Eyre ; in fact the 0.
