DOWNE. DOWN. A-Sax. dm, a hill, as the South Downs, Marlborough Downs, &c. From residence in such a locality have come the surnames Downe, Downer, Downman, Downes, &c. The H.R. form is Ate-Dune, i.e. ' At the Down.'
