DONNE. Izaak Walton, in his Life of Dr. Doime, says tliat "his father was masctdiuely and lineally descended from a very ancient family in AYales." The etymon is probably don, black or dark complexioned. It must not be forgotten, however, that one Donne, a tenant in chief, held land in Devon, temp. Edw. Conf. Domesd.
