This name which might at first sight appear to relate to breadth of back and shoulders— the "vidth" Avhich Mr. Tony Weller associates with "visdom" — i-eally refers to that part of a river which expands into a mere or lake. Le Brode, or The Broad, is a name which was given in ancient times to many such localities.
