gAC or ACK. The initial syllable of many local surnames, signifying oak (A-Sax. ac), as, Ackfield, Ackworth, Akehurst or Ackiiurst, Ackham, Acked, or Aked, &c. IĀ°ACH or AUCH. A prefix in many topographical names of Gaelic origin. It signifies simply "a field" in a loose or general sense of that word. From it proceed the surnames Achmuty, Achauy, &c.
